Effective Disinfecting Protocol
For the proper protocol to disinfect surfaces, it is a little more involved than most people realize. Most importantly choosing the right disinfectant/cleaner first. Refer to EPA registered N products that meet EPA standards. Always read the label thoroughly before using. Safety precautions such as eye protection and gloves may be needed. If the surface is heavily soiled remove as much gross dirt/contamination as a first step. This allows you to drill down to the molecular level prior to the disinfecting stage. Most disinfectants require a dwell time of 10 minutes (some only require 2 to 5 minutes) but for most it is 10 minutes. This means the product needs to stay wet on the surface of the objects you are cleaning, for a minimum of 10 minutes. To wipe off excess disinfectant use microfiber towels that are folded into quarters. Working from wet to dry wipe up the excess changing to a new side of the towel as it gets used up. This helps to ensure that you do not run the risk of cross contamination. When in doubt use a clean application when moving to a new area. Using color coded towels and mops heads helps with this as well. Some products require you to rinse the surface off after use, but not all. Again, read the label. Most disinfectants labels tell you the kill claim, meaning specifically which viruses it can kill and how long of a dwell time it takes. The EPA website can help with that as well. Regular cleanings help to facilitate proper disinfection. The cleaner a surface is the easier.
